Our History

 A Family Tradition of
Hard Work and Slow Growth

Hillandale Farms began in 1958, when Orland Bethel, who was driving a coal truck in Flushing, OH (just outside Wheeling, WV) changed career paths and started to work for an egg company there. He was so excited about the prospects of this company, that he borrowed money to purchase it, and Hillandale Farms was born. His business began as reselling eggs only.

Over the next few years, Orland expanded further into West Virginia and Pittsburgh. In the 60’s, the business continued to blossom as he began supplying the A&P and Giant/Eagle markets. In addition to adding locations including Iowa and Chicago, he grew the business vertically, by incorporating grading into his offering.

In the mid 70’s, our company spread to Florida and started raising chickens for the first time. Soon after, in 1980, Orland’s son Gary joined the company full-time. As the company filled out further throughout Pennsylvania and Ohio, Gary worked his way up with through every job in the company. He drove trucks, worked on the line, and helped in the office. By 2000, Hillandale Farms included sites in historic Gettysburg and Spring Grove, Pennsylvania. And by then, the company was raising and caring for almost 10 million chickens.

Today, Hillandale Farms raises over 20 million chickens for eggs and is one of the top 5 egg producers in the country! We handle everything about their raising and care, except hatching them. We are still family-owned and operated and we still care about the safety and conditions of our birds. They get only vegetarian feed, and we’ve developed many proprietary techniques and technologies to increase their safety and comfort.
